Winning Edge Leadership Communication Interns

Reports to: Executive Director and Communications Committee Chair
Purpose: To assist the Executive Director with communications and marketing for The Winning Edge 
Time Commitment: January 2019 – July 2019; 10-15 hours per week
Type: Unpaid, school credit 

One night in 2014, co-founders Corinne Milien and Maria Taylor had a conversation about the lack of minorities and women in their respective fields of sports business.  They wanted to do something about it and in August 2015, they launched the first class of game changers providing college students with industry mentors to gain insight and experience.  Since 2015, The Winning Edge has influenced more than 25 students and young professionals.We develop the next generation of women and minority leaders by providing mentors, an influential network, financial and cognitive resources as they begin their journey in the sports industry.  We bridge the gap of experience and opportunity for underrepresented groups in sports business.  We also provide viable candidates for organizations working in sports and entertainment.

Communication interns will assist the Executive Director with Winning Edge communications. Two (2) interns are sought to assist in these areas. Ideal candidates will be energetic, inventive, hardworking, social media and web-savvy, and brimming with ideas about creative ways to engage audiences in the organization’s mission. While assisting with a wide range of projects, interns will build their network, gain hands-on experience and training in many aspects of marketing and development, while also gaining a good understanding of a small nonprofit organization. 


Interns' responsibilities will include: 

  •  A commitment to work 10-15 hours per week January to July 2019. 

  •  Attend weekly staff meeting in person or via teleconference.

  •  Assisting staff with tracking, formatting and archiving news clippings and other media. 

  •  Assisting in the production of advertisements, press releases, and promotional materials. 

Multimedia Intern:

  • Create and distribute rich media (graphics and video) via social media and other channels related to programming 

  • Make necessary updates to The Winning Edge website 

  • Create/edit program material for 2019 Game Changing Retreat


Public Relations Intern:

  • Write and edit blog posts and e-newsletter

  • Serve as media liaison for organization to include:

    • Writing and distributing press releases

    • Handling press inquiries

 Qualified candidates will be/have: 

  • Live in or around the Atlanta/Metro Atlanta area*

  • A commitment to the mission of The Winning Edge

  • Passion for effective communication and utilizing various tools to deliver messaging 

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented individuals with superior written, verbal and organizational skills. 

  • Excellent computer skills with experience in Social Media & Microsoft office 

  • The ability to work independently and with others

  • Dependability, flexibility, and ability to maintain confidentiality. 

  • The ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines. 

 Multimedia Intern

  • Experience using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere

  • Experience using Squarespace

Public Relations Intern

  • Excellent writing and editing press releases and other forms of communication

  • Experience using Squarespace

*Exception if student is from Atlanta/Metro Atlanta but attends school outside of area and will be home for the summer.

The Winning Edge Leadership Academy provides unpaid internships designed to expose qualified applicants to communications and other aspects of the nonprofit and sports business industry. The acceptance process will be highly selective. Benefits of an internship with The Winning Edge include hands-on learning experience and the ability to network with a wide variety of individuals in sports business. College credit is also available. 

Interested applicants must be in the third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree; higher level applicants are welcome.
