Dream Team: Dr. Leah Turner

Dr. Leah Turner is the program director for GeoSTEM Career Exploration and Workforce Development: a STEM education initiative at The University of Texas at Austin providing education and resources for K-12 to improve the diversity of students going into STEM careers. She received her PhD in higher education at Ohio University and was formerly an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Charleston.

WE: What drew you to Winning Edge in the beginning?

Leah: Corinne and Maria built WE to improve the representation of minorities in sport business and create access for others through the platform they worked so hard to build for themselves. It’s a real representation of selflessness. In one of the most competitive fields, these women acknowledged a need for diversity, and they are dedicated to supporting young people’s dreams. They are genuine and you don’t find that too often in people. I believe in them and the mission of Winning Edge.

WE: How did you become part of the Advisory Committee?

Leah: Corinne needed help and I love to research. I got you, sis!

WE: Why is diversity important to you?

Leah: Why is it not important to everyone!? In this case, it’s imperative for the demographics of governing bodies in professional and collegiate sport to resemble that of the athlete population. This is not the case and that needs to change.

WE: What's the most meaningful or memorable part of your career?

Leah: Every time I get communication from a former student-athlete telling me they got a job, they graduated, or they are going to grad school. I am so proud!

WE: What's one tip you'd give to a company considering Gigs for Game Changers?

Leah: Come with the good gigs. These Game Changers are talented and motivated. They work hard and they deserve a shot!
