Cam Fenton was a Game Changer during the inaugural 2018 Winning Edge Leadership Retreat, and since has begun his career as a Development Associate at Texas Christian University Frog Club.
Although Fenton was not a student-athlete at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, he was a member of the Strength and Conditioning staff. Cam began as an Intern and advanced his way to a full coach by the end of his time on campus.
From getting the opportunity to meet major figures in the sports industry and beyond at the Winning Edge Retreat, Cam cites the Dinners of Influence and networking opportunities as some of his favorites.
“I mean the biggest thing for me was the networking. Getting to sit at the table with a figure like Dr. Carla Williams and just top-notch leaders in the industry like them was extremely beneficial.”
This was especially memorable for him as Dr. Carla Williams, the current Athletic Director at the University of Virginia, is in a career path he one day hopes to follow.
While working through the athletic department of his undergraduate institution through to his current position, he has been able to take away valuable experiences from the Winning Edge Retreat into his professional path.
“The Game Changing Retreat really has allowed me to have more confidence as a minority in this role,” Fenton mentioned. “To see some of the heavy hitters in the industry, be at the table with them, have a conversation and seeing that they're no different than I am has really helped me thrive.”
When breaking down his biggest message for all future cohort members, he highlighted that they should be “completely open to everything and just soak it in.”
