Atlanta, GA – Today, The Winning Edge Leadership Academy announced ten Game Changers that make up the second cohort for the Gigs for Game Changers (G4G) initiative with Chicago-based Wilson Sporting Goods. This diverse cohort of student-athletes and young professionals will work remotely and on location in Chicago to support The Dreamville Chi-League powered by Wilson. After a four-year hiatus, Dreamville Records and Wilson have come together to revive one of basketball’s most celebrated competitions in Chicago, the landscape for Game Changers completing projects in marketing, operations, communications, and social responsibility.

In addition to creating projects surrounding the summer Pro-Am tournament, Wilson mentors and Dreamville employees will engage Game Changers as they participate in career and professional development content including effective networking, compelling presentations, professional dining, best practices for social media, resume writing, maximizing their digital presence, interview prep and candid discussions with industry professionals on growing a successful career in sports business. The Winning Edge and Wilson will also collaborate on community events including a career panel and town hall.

Executive Director of The Winning Edge Corinne Milien said of the partnership:“Wilson returning this summer shows their continued commitment to promote diversity in sport business by providing the next generation of leaders access to mentorship, networking and workforce training. This unique experience will engage, empower, and elevate a diverse pool of talent as they continue or begin their career in the industry.”

The G4G: Wilson Summer 2021 cohort features student-athletes and young professionals representing nine schools. Three of the 10 Game Changers are currently in graduate school and one is competing professionally overseas.

About The Dreamville Chi-League Powered by Wilson:

Known to bring together current NBA stars, former collegiate standouts and local high school legends, the NBA-sanctioned pro-am will feature a men’s bracket consisting of eight 10-player teams in a single-elimination tournament hosted at Chicago State on Sunday, Aug. 8, Aug. 15 and Aug. 22. For the first time, Chi-League will include a women’s bracket comprised of four 10-player teams that will play the final two weekends, following the same format.

When planning the comeback, allyship through the power of sport was equally as important as continuing Chi-League’s on-court traditions. Through the new Chi-League, Wilson will work alongside Dreamville to provide the opportunity to build bonds with its local Chicago basketball community in multiple ways:

  • Wilson and Dreamville will co-host youth clinics each Saturday of the league, working with local trainers and Chi-League coaches at the South Side YMCA (63rd St. & Stony Island Ave.)

  • The Winning Edge will facilitate a Town Hall to build a long-term relationship with the local community and enable allyship through action.

  • Local black-owned businesses from the surrounding neighborhoods will be engaged for on-site concessions and entertainment.

Gaining Experience with Chelsea Scott

Gaining Experience with Chelsea Scott

Last weekend I was afforded the opportunity to work the Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. I learned about this opportunity through the WinningEdgeX platform that connects Game Changers with opportunities to work in the sports industry.

Game Changer Catch Up: Brianna Gladney

Brianna Gladney is from San Antonio, Texas and a graduate of Xavier University. Gladney majored in sports administration and management while competing on the women’s basketball team. She was a member of the 2019 Game Changing Retreat cohort and currently works as the coordinator of executive operations for the Orange Bowl Committee. Noor Ahmed and espnW Women + Sports Summit

Noor Ahmed and espnW Women + Sports Summit

When Maria texted me those words I honestly thought she was going to tell me she had an internship opportunity for me or she was going to connect me with someone. I should have known better. Nothing she or the Winning Edge ever does is small. As it turns out, Maria was inviting me to attend the espnW Women + Sports Summit. Like what?! “Why me? I’m not that special.” I did not realize how much attending the summit would change my perspective.

Alyssa Rice and WLCS National Convention

Alyssa Rice and WLCS National Convention

As a young girl growing up in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, I would constantly think of what I wanted to be when I got older. From a “hair doer”, to a second grade teacher, to a physical therapist, the idea of my future self was changed on a daily basis. I always knew I enjoyed playing sports and it was not until my appointment to the SEC Women’s Basketball Leadership Council that I discovered my passion for collegiate athletics, more specifically, enhancing the overall student athlete experience.

After tearing my Achilles just two days prior I was now forced to focus on being apart of the sports industry in a way other than being an athlete. I always knew I wanted to be a sports reporter and taking part in the retreat allowed me to rub shoulders with mentors who were willing to help those like me  striving to be where they are some day.

For the past five months, I have had the privilege to work with ESPN Events as an Event Assistant (Intern) for the 2017 fall season. Through this internship, I had to opportunity to work on a number of basketball and football events with my primary focus being the MEAC/ SWAC Challenge and the Celebration Bowl.

When faced with the decision to select an enrichment trip, I had no idea of where I wanted to go, learn, or experience. Two of my fellow peers from the Winning Edge informed me about the Sports Management Worldwide Football Career Conference during the NFL Combine and encouraged me to tag along.
